Before starting the pre-enrolment process, it is recommended to check the Access and Admission requirements as they vary depending on the country where the university degree was obtained, the language in which it was studied, the Master’s programme applied for, etc. It is important to carefully review the information regarding your case as it may take time to process the necessary documentation. In addition, students interested in taking the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence must hold a degree in computer science:
- Bachelor of Science in Informatics Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Informatics
- Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Information Systems
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Technologies for the Information Society
- or equivalent
or alternatively, a related qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Physics with a specialisation in Computing
- Any degree developed in the field of engineering with a predominantly technological profile (biomedical, telecommunications, etc.)
Students holding degrees awarded before the deployment of the EHEA shall be required to hold the equivalent academic qualifications to the above degree programmes (licentiate, engineer or technical engineer).
Pre-registration to apply for access and admission to the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence (MUIA) is done online through the HELIOS application. Applicants submit, through this platform, all the information required to assess whether they meet the conditions of access and, where appropriate, be admitted as a student on the programme.
To access the MUIA it is necessary to be in possession of an official university degree, with the profile described above, which entitles access to Master’s studies.
In case an applicant has NOT finished his/her bachelor’s degree, the UPM Admission Regulations allow him/her to pre-enrol if the following requirements are met:
- Only the Final Degree Project (TFG) and a maximum of 9 credits remain to obtain the degree, which must be accredited with an official academic transcript in which this situation is reliably confirmed and where the credits passed and the credits required by their degree are stated.
- UPM students in Successive Academic Programmes (PARS) with a maximum of 30 credits remaining, including the TFG.
Applicants who do not meet this requirement at the time of pre-enrolment may be admitted on a conditional basis, and must provide proof of compliance before 30 September. Otherwise, admission will be cancelled.
Under no circumstances may the Master’s degree be obtained without having previously completed the Bachelor’s degree.
The admission process allocates the places offered by the university among applicants who have pre-registered, providing all the necessary documentation.
The Academic Committee of the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence (CAMIA) is responsible for the admission of its students, publishing the admission lists in three periods, according to the calendar set by the UPM.
The admission criteria applied by CAMIA are in accordance with the provisions of the ETSIINF Internal Quality Assurance System and the UPM Admission Regulations, but also take into account the following aspects:
- For new applicants with a degree that is not in the field of computer science but related to it, the training complements deemed necessary will be established (up to a maximum of 12 ECTS).
- If the number of applicants is much higher than the number of places offered, a selection process will be carried out for admission. The reference elements that CAMIA will consider in the student selection process may include: the degree studied, the university of origin, the curriculum vitae and/or academic record, knowledge of languages, and that the student can enrol full time.
All those students who have been admitted to the MUIA, in the first or second admission period, and have NOT taken previous studies at the UPM must formalise their place reservation within the deadline established in the UPM Calendar. The reservation fee is 250 euros, which will be deducted from the registration fee. There will be no refund if the registration is not formalised.

The international quality label Euro-Inf, which MUIA holds, requires that the learning outcomes established by EQANIE for the master’s degree in Computer Science are achieved by all students taking the degree. The MUIA Academic Committee (CAMIA), in order to ensure that all students whose entry profile is not from the field of Computer Science but related to it can achieve these objectives, will establish for these students up to a maximum of 12 ECTS of complementary training to be taken through subjects of the Degree in Computer Engineering (GII) or the Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science (GMI) taught at the ETS of Computer Engineering of the UPM.

- From the field of Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, and Networks.:
- Computer networks
- Information technologies process management
The assignment of training complements is done on an individual basis for each student, for which all students will be asked to provide information on the computer science subjects they have studied in their related degrees and the contents of these subjects. After analysing this information, the complementary courses to be taken will be identified, with a maximum of 12 ECTS, and the corresponding subjects.
Master’s programming proposals for students with training complements:
Once admitted to the master’s degree, students must formalise their enrolment online by means of an automatic enrolment system, in which students can select and manage their own enrolment and print the payment letter(s). The ordinary annual enrolment period for the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence, as well as the un-enrolment period for second semester subjects (Seminars) and the extended enrolment period (only for the Master’s Thesis) are available in the academic calendar:

Notes:
- All students will make annual registration.
- A minimum of 12 credits to be enrolled annually is established, except for those students who have a lower number of credits to finish their studies. There is no limit to the maximum number of credits to enroll.
- The student may choose between the single payment or the installment payment. In the latter case, eight installments will be established for the payment of tuition.
- Bridge complements must be enrolled in the regular (annual) registration period.
- The seminars are registered as a single subject of 10 ECTS, and are given in the second semester. Seminars must be also enrolled in the regular (annual) registration period.
- The Master’s Final Project (MFP) can be registered in the regular or extended enrollment periods, and can be defended at any time during the corresponding year or semester.
- In attention to the uniqueness of the MFP, in case the student has not been able to overcome it in an academic year, the prices to be paid in the following academic year will be those corresponding to 25% of the price in the first registration of the Decree of Public Prices, which will entitle the student to a single examination session without prejudice to the rest of the rights acquired when registering in said subject.
- Students that are not enrolled for any Master in Artificial Intelligence subject lose their official status as students of the UPM and are not eligible for official or unofficial grants, mobility assistance… On this ground, we advise students that have completed the rest of the course to register for their MFP at the start of the respective semester to ensure that they retain their UPM student status.

The Academic Committee of the Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence (CAMIA) will analyse the requests and draw up the corresponding reports, which will be sent to the Academic Organisation Committee of the School of Computer Engineering, which in turn will issue a report and send it to the Vice-Rector’s Office for Students. The resolution granting or denying the recognition of credits will be adopted by the President of the Credit Recognition and Transfer Committee in accordance with the provisions of art. 5 d) of the regulations.
In those particular situations in which students have run out the three academic years but they wish to continue their master studies, it will be mandatory to submit an application to the Academic Committee of the University’s Master in Artificial Intelligence, responsible for analysing the student´s status to then submit his/her application to the Academic Planning Committee of School of Computer Science
This includes the requirement that students must pass at least 15 ECTS during their first academic year, and at least 45 ECTS during the first two academic years of enrolment.
